The Power of Beliefs - One way to change them

In my last few posts, I’ve been exploring the relationship between our beliefs and our results. Stated simply, but accurately, our beliefs determine our thoughts, our thoughts determine our emotions, those determine our actions and our actions determine our results. So in the world of cause and effect, beliefs are cause and results are the effects.

I further pointed out what Albert Einstein had to say on the subject. He said “The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or a hostile universe.” I concluded that the vast majority of you do not understand how much you are driven by the fear-based, hostile-universe-believing voice of the ego.

In my last post, I suggested redefining all of your beliefs as thoughts, thoughts that may be true and thoughts that might not be true. This could be easier than would appear right away. Why? Because all of our beliefs and all of our thoughts live in language. No language, no thoughts and no beliefs. So language, and the way you use it, is critical to moving forward in changing your beliefs.

Here’s the challenge: people wake up in the morning, look out at their world and see what they see. If you were to actually observe this phenomenon, you would conclude that people believe what they see is actually there. After all, we have eyes, they don’t lie to us. What we see is what is there. But think about this: how often to you find that others looking at the exact same person or circumstances, see them completely different? All the time! So how could what you see be actually there? Yet we use language mistakenly to describe what we think is indeed there.

Consider that your eyes do not work the way you think they do. The fact of the matter is that when you awake in the morning and open your eyes, your eyes are literally acting like the lens on a projector to project your beliefs and your thoughts onto a neutral world. This is why the 7+ billion people on the planet all live in a different reality. As I discussed last week, you are the creator of your reality and you do it with language.

So the function of language is not to report on what is “out there,” but to create what is “out there.” And this is why it’s not as difficult as it might seem to change your beliefs. Again, change your beliefs, change your results. What I’m suggesting is to start noticing what comes out of your mouth. There’s a great line in my book Unshackled Leadership, see http://www.unshackledleadership.com/products/. It goes like this: “Your tongue is like a paintbrush. Every time you open your mouth, you paint a picture for yourself and everybody around you to live in. As humans, we are usually unconscious of what comes out of our mouths. I’m asking you to stop that. Wake up. Listen to your thoughts and to the words you say. Decide in advance what you will say about everything and everybody. Then start saying that! It will change your world, your life, and the world and lives of all the people around you. Best of all, doing so will put you on the path to being a twenty-first century leader.”
