The Power of Beliefs - Part Two

In my last post, I stated that there is a definite cause and effect relationship between your beliefs and your results. Stated simply, but accurately, your beliefs determine your thoughts, your thoughts determine your emotions, those determine your actions and your actions determine your results. So in the world of cause and effect, beliefs are cause and results are the effects.

I further pointed out what Albert Einstein had to say on the subject. He said “The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or a hostile universe.” I concluded that the vast majority of you do not understand how much you are driven by the fear-based, hostile universe believing voice of the ego.

Here are some of the consequences of not recognizing this reality. Everyone lives in a different reality, a reality that they make up. Our reactions are always in response to how that reality occurs for us. But in the vast majority of cases, people think that someone or something outside of them is determining how things occur. Absolutely not true. You’re determining how things occur for you.

Here’s an example. Let’s say you’re playing tennis. The person on the other side of the net hits the ball to your right. What do you do? Run to the right to hit the ball. Then they hit it to the left. You run to the left to hit the ball. What are you responding to? Very simply, how the ball occurs for you as it comes across the net.

Many years ago I was watching the Wimbledon final where Stefan Edberg beat Boris Becker for the championship. As Stefan walked off the court, the sports reporter asked him a number of questions, one of which was: “what was it like for you on the court.” His answer stunned me at the time. He said: “as the match wore on, the ball got bigger and bigger and came across the net slower and slower and I got to the point where I knew I would make every shot.”

This is what makes all great athletes great. They see the game in slow motion. How the game occurs for them is different from how it occurs for the ordinary athlete. I was told that some of the great hitters in baseball, like Ted Williams, can actually see the seam of the ball and how it’s rotating when coming to the plate. Amazing.

The point is: it is the same for you. Your actions are always correlated to how the circumstances of life occur for you and you are the one deciding that. If you live in the fear-based, hostile universe of the ego, guess how life is going to occur for you? Scary! You’ll worry a lot and try to manipulate everything and everyone to get away from the fear. But if you choose to believe you live in a friendly universe, it’s a whole new ball game. Until the next post, start noticing what’s true for you. The path of enlightenment always starts with becoming aware.
