Learn to Think Differently

Here I am at the annual meeting of the National Speakers Association in Indianapolis, IN, networking with, listening to and learning from my fellow professional speakers. The sharing has been awesome and I could spend pages talking about some of the ideas that have been presented. But here’s one that gets to the heart of the matter if you have a leadership position in a business.

What do all businesses want? When you get to the bottom line, it all comes down to:

Selling more of your products or services,

Increased profits,

More customers, and, hopefully,

Happier and more satisfied employees.

If you run or work in a business that leaves out the last one, here’s at least one good reason to put it in: happier and more satisfied employees sell more products and services, increase profits and bring in more customers!

Anyway, as I listen to people share their ideas about how to accomplish the above four objectives, I once again am reminded that conventional wisdom is never going to show you how to do that. What is conventional wisdom? Just look at the titles of some of the most successful books: The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People; Good to Great, Lessons Learned from the Best Run Companies, etc. What do these books and many others like them teach? Simply put: learn what others who have been successful have done and do that! And that my dear readers is what we are preached to over and over again.

Unfortunately, and I have been reminded again many times these last few days, and want to remind you of again, knowing what to do and doing it will never guarantee that you will be as successful as the one telling you what to do. In fact, you might not be successful at all. And the simple reason for that is that success is not a function of what you do but a function of who you are! And who are you? That is determined by how you think and operate in the world.

Every truly successful person thinks in a way that is the source of their success. Successful leaders think differently than leaders who are not successful, that is the bottom line. So if you want to be successful and be a successful leader, learn to think like successful people and successful leaders think.

Unsuccessful leaders are stopped by their fears. Fear paralyzes or delays them. Successful leaders notice their fears and take action anyway.

Unsuccessful leaders play the game of business not to lose. Successful leaders play to win.

Unsuccessful leaders consider the cost or expense in what they do and let money make their decisions for them. Successful leaders look at everything from the perspective of an investment and if a reasonable or great return is anticipated, they take action
