Trust: The Forgotten Emotion

Do you ever notice how much you’re into “doing.” If you’re like the vast majority of people who run companies, or even run work teams, or even run your own operation inside of a larger organization, you surely have goals, objectives, deadlines, obligations and such. You likely awaken each day, look at your to-do list or list of obligations and tasks, then head out for the day. With me so far?

Here’s the thing that never seems to get noticed inside this scenario. It surely wasn’t obvious to me during all the years I operated exactly as I describe. All of this activity assumes two things: first, that it’s critical to get done what’s on your to-do list and second, that it’s critical that you get it done.

The result of operating in this way is an enormous amount of stress. The vast majority of people live their workday facing what often seems like an unending list of things that just have to get done, by them, today, with lots of pressure to accomplish it all. No wonder we go home at the end of the day emotionally and physically exhausted, just to face the corresponding list of things that have to get done in our personal lives.

If any of this sounds familiar, there is a solution, although I hasten to add that it’s so revolutionary, you’ll likely reject it as impractical, unrealistic or naïve. But I assure you, it is none of those things and you’ll just have to try it out and see.

In a word, the solution is: trust, which I call the forgotten emotion. “Trust what?” you say. Relax, take a nice deep breathe, look at what’s in front of you, and:

Trust that what needs to get done will get done.

Trust that if what needs to get done requires your action, you’ll know that and that you are totally competent and able to do whatever is required of you.

Trust that you’ll have all the time to get done what you need to get done and that it will all turn out perfectly and there is no need for you to stress about it.

Trust that if you don’t get to it today, there’s always tomorrow and that will be perfect.

Trust that if you need assistance, all of the people and things necessary to assist you will be there when needed.

I could go on and on, but I hope I’ve made my point. Relax. Chill out. Stop with all the frantic doing. The world is not going to come to an end if you don’t complete your to-do list for the day. All the stress is just not worth it. Life is meant to be an exciting adventure, not a struggle filled with frustration. Just learn to trust and see how much more effective you’ll become.
